Mother says sentence comes up short for former deputy who killed her son [Breaking]
More than a dozen activists held a protest outside the Hall of Justice on Saturday to rally against what they consider a light sentence handed down earlier this month to a former sheriff’s deputy who shot and killed a fleeing man.
Kathleen Bils complained that former Deputy Aaron Russell received one year in jail after pleading guilty to voluntary manslaughter — and that he would likely be released in a few months due to credits for time served. According to a report issued earlier this month by the California State Auditor, 185 inmates died in Sheriff’s Department custody between 2006 and 2020. Conditions inside the jail system are so dangerous, auditors said, state legislation should be passed to force reforms.
Miller and other activists said police and sheriff’s deputies must be held more accountable when citizens die as a result of negligence or misconduct. He said prosecutors and judges also need to do more to mete out justice for families of deceased inmates.
