.ThomBrowneNY's art film in collaboration with MosesSumney isn’t just a “fashion film,” it unites artistry, design, music, and creativity.

The three-minute video is pared down, just the musician against a white backdrop singing an arrangement he created of the Olympic Hymn wearing a white sequin wrap skirt—the sole item Browne is previewing from his spring 2021 collection, which will be revealed in full only in the fall. In its arresting visuals and poignant messages, this isn’t just a “fashion film”—a bit of jargon of comparable ick to “phygital”—it unites artistry, design, music, and creativity.
“The question I asked Thom was: What does it mean to put a Black body on a pedestal in statuesque poses at a time when literal statues are being toppled around the country, around the world, at a time when white suprematist relics are being destroyed, challenged, removed, and descended nationally with fervor? What does this symbolism mean?” Sumney said over the phone from his home in Asheville, North Carolina, where he filmed the short.
And direct it he did, assembling a local crew in Asheville. “I decided that we were going to take a bunch of people with a ton of potential, who maybe wouldn’t have access to this world, and give them the tools and push them to make this high concept project. It was a lot of work but everyone really rose to the challenge,” he continues. He connected with a local DP, Andrew Anderson, and invited a photographer friend to be a first-time producer.
“There are many things [I hope people take from this film,]” Sumney begins. “I think the fashion world feels like such a dynasty and you gain relevance largely by inheritance in that world. That has always been an obstacle for people like me—I’m not from New York City, I’m not from a rich family, I’m not from a fashion family.
