A large study analysing data from nearly 50,000 adults found that people generally experience their highest levels of happiness and well-being in the morning, with feelings worsening as the day progresses. The research also confirmed that summer months tend to be associated with improved mental health compared to winter.

The research also reinforced what people often believe to be true – that the summer months make people feel happier than the winter ones. Researchers added: “There is also an association with day of the week and season, with particularly strong evidence for better mental health and wellbeing in the summer.”
For the study, researchers looked at variations in mental health , happiness, life satisfaction, the sense of life being worthwhile, and loneliness. However, they said the differences noted between weekdays and weekends may be driven by things such as the sequence of daily activities, which are likely to be different between weekends and weekdays.
“However, this pattern could reflect when people choose to respond to the survey, rather than a direct effect of time of day.
