Texas linebacker David Gbenda has played just 62 total snaps this season despite grading out as the team’s second-best run defender, per Pro Football Focus.Texas is going to miss having DeMarvion Overshown around.
“That's the life of where we're at, but that also creates opportunity for other players on our team to step up and play in a great game,” Sarkisian said last Saturday. “And so moving forward, it's a little bit seamless at linebacker just because of Tucker-Dorsey and what he's done at that position, Mo Blackwell, what he's done out there at linebacker. Then obviously, it does create opportunities for David Gbenda to start getting more reps, so that's been good.
For both Blackwell and Gbenda, the Alamo Bowl will mark an opportunity to show coaches they’re ready to take on a bigger role in 2023 with Overshown, Tucker-Dorsey and potentially Ford moving on. At 6-foot-1 and 196 pounds, Blackwell still needs to bulk up if he’s going to stick at linebacker, much like Overshown did when spinning down from safety in 2020 following his sophomore year. But like the player he’s aiming to replace, Blackwell possesses all the tools needed to become a high-octane linebacker/edge rusher hybrid in Kwiatkowski’s system.
Blackwell and Gbenda aren’t just competing against each other or even the current roster. They’re also competing against the future.
