The US will increase rotations of bomber task forces, fighters, US Navy and US Army capabilities in Australia as part of its step-up of activity in the region.

| The United States will ramp up its military presence in Australia and has declared it will not leave Canberra with a “capability gap” in its defences at a time when China exerts itself in the Pacific.

An official communique noted that there would be enhanced air co-operation through the rotational deployment of all US aircraft types in Australia and appropriate aircraft training and exercises.Washington has already been planning to build dedicated facilities for six B-52 aircraft at the Tindal air base, south of Darwin, where thousands of US Marines have spent stints of about six months since 2012.

“The most important capability that Australia is looking to pursue right now is, of course, a nuclear-powered submarine capability, and we are very mindful of the significance of the United States working with the United Kingdom through the AUKUS framework in providing Australia with that capability,” he said.

Mr Blinken said the ministers discussed the “challenges posed by PRC [People’s Republic of China]“, including “attempts to disrupt the freedom of navigation the South China Sea, efforts to unilaterally change the status quo and undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and attempts to intimidate other countries through economic coercion”.

Neither Mr Marles nor Senator Wong mentioned the word “China” during a press conference with media following the meetings.
