Meanwhile, some parking lots in Houston have started to vanish in the past decade. Between 2010 and 2022, 21 lots were demolished and replaced with buildings, Axios . On average, 20 percent of all city's center land is used for parking. The network said the current high parking concentration nationwide offers an opportunity for local officials to convert these spaces into walkable neighborhoods, parks, or additional housing options for residents. “Suppose all parking in all 50 city centers analyzed was converted to residential, at a density of 40,000 people per square mile,” the report said. “In that case, we could provide enough housing for a quarter of a million people.”
