More than 225 store spaces sit empty in central Pa. malls, outlets

Some malls and outlets are surviving, but others are turning to alternate uses.

By 2021, almost every mall in the region, no matter how successful, had been hit by at least one big box store closing -- and in some cases even two or three, which in turn meant less business and more difficulties for smaller stores. Some malls have been successful in filling those large spaces, while others resemble ghost towns.
