The NDIS is on track to once again exceed official participant projections as the program experiences strong enrolment rates among children with autism.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme is on track to again exceed official participant projections as children with autism enrol in unexpectedly high numbers.

The program has experienced strong growth in children under the age of seven with autism and developmental delay joining the scheme, with about 100,000 kids now NDIS participants. Former NDIA official Hassan Noura said lowering the scheme’s growth trajectory would not happen unless eligibility criteria were tightened for children and people with psychosocial disability.

If enrolment rates hold steady at 200 people a day, the NDIS will exceed its June 2024 projection of 646,000 participants by December 2023.The NDIA forecasts that the program will have more than 1 million participants by 2032 and cost close to $100 billion annually.
