A gun buyback event took 107 firearms off the streets of the Waukegan area, as members of the city police department paid $100 cash for each functioning weapon with the assistance of the Most Blessed Trinity Parish and the Catholic Archdiocese of Chicago.

Waukegan Mayor Ann Taylor speaks after the gun buyback Saturday at Most Blessed Trinity Parish.

After the three-hour event, police and church officials displayed the collection of rifles, shotguns, handguns and one Uzi submachine gun on five tables to demonstrate the breadth of what was collected. Police paid $25 for nonfunctioning guns.Scott Chastain, a Waukegan deputy police chief, said there was a collection of long guns — such as rifles, shotguns and carbines — along with handguns, including revolvers and service pistols.

“For me, this means fewer funerals,” O’Malley said. “This was a win for the community. It was very effective. It will bring comfort to the community. I know this will help make things better for us.”Also helping with the event was Sister Mary Popit of Waukegan, a nun with the Sisters of the Holy Jesus. She said she is committed to preventing gun violence, and wants to do anything she can to assist. She too felt the buyback was well worth it.

“We walked from Park along Central Avenue into town, held a rally and walked back,” she said. “It was very peaceful. It was a good event.”Little did Popit know at the time a gunman would kill seven people and wound dozens more less than a month later during Highland Park’s July 4 parade. She said when she heard the news of the shooting she was shaken.
