Record crowds are expected as Australia and New Zealand kick off the FIFA Women's World Cup on Thursday, with organisers predicting an 'epic opening' to the first edition of the tournament ever held in the southern hemisphere.
The first-ever edition of the tournament held in the southern hemisphere starts on Thursday, with the Football Ferns taking on Norway and the Matildas playing the Republic of Ireland.
New Zealand is expected to set a new record attendance for an international football match and more than treble the largest crowd for the country's women's team. Picture: Naomi Baker - FIFA/FIFA via Getty Images FIFA Chief Women's Football Officer Sarai Bareman hailed the expected attendance numbers, saying she was hopeful the World Cup would be a"watershed moment" for women's sports.
"Not only from an attendance perspective, but way beyond that, when it comes to developing the game globally and celebrating female empowerment."
