The Australian army will be restructured for maritime operations.

Hundreds of troops will be shifted to Townsville as part of a restructure of the army to prepare it to fight a Pacific island-hopping campaign against an adversary such as China.

But while military chiefs believe the overhaul will help reduce the hollowing out of the army’s ranks and may produce budget savings by consolidating assets, it is likely to be criticised for discouraging retention and limiting the army’s ability to conduct continuous operations.

The biggest increase will be in Townsville, where 400 to 500 extra servicemen and women will add to the 4000 already there. The current fleet of Abrams tanks will be relocated from Adelaide and Brisbane, andNew squadrons of landing craft will also be set up in the three northern bases to support littoral operations once army selects a design.
