Rotational load shedding has a negative impact on the lives of KZN’s senior citizens who are too often on the receiving end of violence. This is according to the Age-in-Action organisation, which represents elderly people in the country. | WitnessKZN

A social worker at Age-in-Action, Busisiwe Khoza, said the organisation has received numerous complaints from members of the public reporting cases relating to elderly abuse during load shedding. Khoza said the elderly were attacked in their homes during power outages.

“In some cases it becomes impossible to crack cases relating to elderly abuse simply because the senior citizens are not willing to give us information that will lead to the arrest of their attackers. We have discovered that the elderly people living alone with their abuser is more likely to endure more severe levels of mistreatment. Many of the cases relating to elderly abuse occurred during the load shedding,” Khoza said.
