Monty the cavoodle visits this school part-time, and his presence is increasing attendance

Therapy dogs are proven to alleviate anxiety, something school students in Australia are increasingly experiencing, but as their popularity grows experts say more regulation is needed.

He has been a fixture at St Monica's ever since.After full vaccination and a training course, Monty spent a few months at the school full-time.

Around the late 18th century, England's Quaker York Retreat was using rabbits and poultry to achieve the same results, and Sigmund Freud's patient consultations featured pet chow chow, Jofi. St Monica's students also had to upskill, and were taught "Monty can" and "Monty can't" manners, to ensure the dog's own mental health was not compromised.

TDA has trained hundreds of dog-and-handler teams to provide in-school services and is advocating for more regulation of the industry.
