The strong weather system that brought flash flooding, hail, wild winds and freezing temperatures to Western Australia on Monday is heading east, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Alison Osborne.
The front reached south-west WA on Sunday night, bringing Perth's heaviest single day of rain since 2018 as well as widespread hail, powerful winds and the coldest weather since last winter.
Severe weather warnings for heavy rain are already in place for eastern SA and Victoria’s west and central ranges as the rain band moves through on Wednesday. This is easily over a month’s rain for the Murray-Darling Basin – a huge turnaround from last month, which was the second driest may on record for Australia. The heaviest rain comes in with warm winds and a freezing level far too high for any snow to form ahead of the King’s Birthday long weekend – the official season opener.
From Friday, colder weather moves into the southeast with another cold front, bringing follow-up showers and a few snowflakes for the Alps.
