Steele said he first noticed a few small blisters under his mouth on July 11. Since he'd spent the weekend on a boat, he chalked it up to irritation from sunscreen or shaving. But by day three, Steele said he noticed that the blisters had formed in a cluster and were getting bigger but would not pop, unlike typical pimples.

Steele’s lesions progressed from pimple-like bumps to large sores and crusted lesions, which he said were painful. After about two and a half weeks of the illness, his lesions finally started to get smaller. “The pink edges show that it’s healing,” Steele said in a video updating viewers on July 28. Prior to the current outbreak, the rash would usually start on the face and hands before spreading to the rest of the body. Buton the current outbreak have found that lesions around the anus, genitals, mouth and throat are often first and don't always spread to other parts of the body.

Since his photos went viral, Steele said he has had to deal with the"monkeypox stare" and"cold shoulder" from some people who recognize him in public. “I sort of was bracing for that when I re-entered society. ... I know all that comes from a place of fear.” Maxim Sapozhnikov, a creative producer and fashion blogger living in Milan, Italy, opened up about being infected with monkeypox in June. In a TikTok posted on June 26 that has garnered over 12.1 million views, Sapozhnikov shared images of what looked like"pimples," as Sapozhnikov put it, but turned out to be monkeypox.
