WORLD No. 1 Kento Momota is indeed very eager to make amends for his two poor outings in Malaysia last year and is not running shy of the challenge. It was initially feared that the two-time world champion might pull out of the Malaysian Masters after he was said to have withdrawn from the Indonesian Masters next week, citing injury as a reason.
The 25-year-old turned up after all and showed no signs of being affected by injury as he bulldozed past P. Kashyap of India 21-17,21-16 in 43 minutes. After the match, Momota confirmed his withdrawal from the Indonesian meet.“I have withdrawn from next week’s event because I’m not in my best condition, ” said Momota.
“It has been hectic for me in December as I had to also take part in the All-Japanese Championships almost immediately after the World Tour Finals . “I’m worried that if I go on to play back-to-back tournaments this week, it will take its toll on my body. I don’t want to risk getting injured. “I carried on playing here in Malaysia as I felt I could still play. I also need to get myself into competitive mode in the early season, otherwise I’ll have no more tournaments for the remainder of this month.Asked if he was desperate to make up for last year’s disappointment, where he lost in the first round to compatriot Kenta Nishimoto, he said: “Well, I have already done better than last year by winning today. Hopefully I can march as far as possible this week.
