The Monterey County Sheriff's Office told SFGATE that witnesses saw the mother, whose name and age have not been released, floating in the water and said that she appeared to be unresponsive. At the scene, rescue teams determined that the woman was unconscious, said Keith Boyd, the county's undersheriff. She was transported to a local hospital, the Coast Guard said.
In the preliminary investigation, officials learned that the woman had a 7-year-old son who was missing, likely in the water, Boyd said. The Coast Guard said that the 3-year-old boy also later told authorities that he had a brother who was missing. "We immediately began a comprehensive search of the shoreline," Boyd told SFGATE over the phone."The search was suspended due to darkness and reinitiated at sunrise."
