PRUNEDALE – Fines are mounting for the landlordfor running an illegal farmworker housing camp in a rural area of Royal Oaks, where around 200 people – including children – were living in unsafe, substandard conditions, county officials said Wednesday.

Nick Pasculli, county communications director, said that as of Wednesday, “a number of folks have relocated” but that he could not give an exact number. Pasculli said “there was a various makeup of families” living in the units, from young children going to school to adults. Asked how long the tenants had been staying in the makeshift rooms, Pasculli said “there’s a variety of time frames we’re trying to hone in on.” That information, he went on, is part of an ongoing investigation by the County of Monterey District Attorney’s Office.

As of Monday, the DA’s Office said it had been in contact with 238 people from the Royal Oaks property. Whether those 238 people were all residents, Pasculli said “not necessarily.”
