Malaysia's Ministry of Education (MOE) is leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to address the growing issue of students skipping the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) exams. The MOE's Student Tracking System (SiPKPM) has been upgraded with AI capabilities, aiming to reduce student dropouts and absenteeism. The AI helps identify 'at-risk students' from primary to secondary school, enabling the MOE to provide timely interventions.

Students skipping the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia ( SPM ) exams in Malaysia has been a persistent issue for the Ministry of Education (MOE). Recently, the ministry revealed that as of February 6th, 8,076 SPM 2024 candidates had been absent for all written papers. This alarming trend was further highlighted by Mr.

Aznan Tamin, Chairman of the Education and Information Committee of Johor, who stated that over 900 students in Johor alone had skipped the SPM because they believed they could secure high-salary jobs in Singapore. Facing this growing challenge, the MOE is employing a new tool in its arsenal: Artificial intelligence (AI). The MOE's Student Tracking System (SiPKPM) has been enhanced with AI capabilities, aimed at reducing student dropouts and absenteeism among SPM candidates. According to Dr. Mohd Azam Ahmad, Education Deputy Director-General (Profession Development Sector), the AI-powered system has already been in operation and is credited with significantly reducing the number of absent SPM students from tens of thousands to the current figure of 8,076. Dr. Mohd Azam explained that the system identifies 'at-risk students' from primary to secondary school, allowing the MOE to provide timely and targeted interventions. He emphasized, “Last year, we introduced an AI-enhanced version, which is now in operation. It assists teachers and school leaders in detecting at-risk students for timely intervention.” The MOE offers 18 forms of assistance for these at-risk students, including those facing financial difficulties and other challenges. The most suitable intervention will be determined collaboratively by the MOE, State Education Departments, and District Education Offices.
