When British model Jena Goldsack became passionate about climate change and environmental issues, she knew she had to do more than simply post an Instagram about it.
“Anyone can post about things online; it’s not enough,” shared Goldsack on the phone from Yulara, in Australia’s Northern Territory. “I wanted to do something meaningful.” A familiar face in ads for Marc Jacobs and on the pages of’s international editions, Goldsack has been in front of the camera since her teens. Now 25, she’s channeling her energy into the issue close to her heart, namely wildlife preservation.
First introduced to sister program the Cornish Seal Sanctuary as a child, Goldsack was familiar with the organization’s mission. “It’s an English charity that I’ve known my whole life,” she says. “They do wonderful work with injured seals, taking them in and rehabilitating them until they’re fit to reenter the wild.
Threatened by increased pollution, global warming, and overharvesting, Beluga whales are increasingly at risk. The fact that they’re frequently used in zoos and marine parks for entertainment only adds to the problem. Captivity can result in shortened life spans and physical injury, but there are few care solutions for animals that have been raised away from their natural habitats and are thus unprepared for the wild.
Originally just a spokesperson, Goldsack wanted to get on the ground in Iceland and channel her concerns into action. She and her good friend, photographer Elizaveta Porodina, headed to the sanctuary for the first time this winter to meet with researchers and see firsthand how the whales are being rehabilitated. “At first, it was a little overwhelming coming face to face with them,” says Goldsack.
