Mobile rappers behind the 'Mardi Gras Song' celebrate the tune’s 15-year run

From the first synthesized keyboard honk, listeners along Mobile’s Mardi Gras parade routes know what’s coming. Just as with the parades themselves, it’s hard not to get caught up in the momentum of the sturdy rhythm and the accompanying chant: “MoonPie, MoonPie, throw me some beads ….”

The story of the song starts well before its 2007 release. Wesley and Whitney grew up in the area known as Down the Bay, their childhood stomping grounds bounded roughly by Broad, Virginia and Texas streets and Washington Avenue. That immersed them in Mardi Gras: Not just the noise of the downtown parades to the north but the flow of city vehicles from Public Works, police traffic from the 1st Precinct.

“From Day One we always were together,” said Whitney Grant. “When it came to the music and we got serious, we were like, ‘This is going to be our gimmick.’” There was just something about the acoustics of the situation that lent itself to verbal jam sessions, said Wesley Grant. “It’s been rollin’ ever since,” said Wesley Grant. “Year after year, more people were starting to hear it. Every year they’d be like, ‘I heard that new song!’ ‘It’s five years old.’ ‘It’s new to me!’”
