The National Weather Service office in Mobile has issued a heat advisory for coastal counties of Alabama and Florida, as well as far southeastern Mississippi counties, today from 10 a.m. through 7 p.m.

The heat, combined with a very moist airmass, will result in heat indices reaching up to 110 to 112 degrees for areas generally north of Interstate 10 by this afternoon.

Infants and young children, people aged 65 or older, people who have a mental illness and those who are physically ill are at the greatest risk. Heat is the number one weather-related killer in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year.Drink more fluids regardless of your activity level. Do not wait until you’re thirsty to drink.

Do not drink liquids that contain caffeine, alcohol, or large amounts of sugar. They cause you to lose more body fluid. Also, avoid very cold drinks because they can cause stomach cramps. Electric fans may provide comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s, fans will not prevent heat-related illness. Moving to an air-conditioned place is a much better way to cool off.Never leave children or pets in a closed, parked vehicle.
