Contrary to established belief, it doesn’t take much to charm a fashion audience: snacks, an apertivo, a location that capitalizes on Milan’s still balmy temperatures. The MM6 team did all of that right tonight, and presented a lineup of engaging clothes to boot. The drink was a gin and ginger cordial made with something called “parfait amour,” and the food included a finger sandwich of Jerusalem artichoke and fennel, and dessert in the form of a hollowed egg shell filled with white chocolate.
The brand’s lead designer name-checked André Breton and his lesser known surrealist compatriots Leonora Carrington and the gender-nonconforming Claude Cahun. A quick post-show Google search turned up a self-portrait of Cahun in a checked jacket.
These were the kind of clothes that will definitely get intrigued double-takes: Shrunken leather jackets and boxy denim ones came cinched at the waist with extra sets of sleeves, a double-breasted pantsuit was made from what looked like paper bag material, and another going-out top took the form of a ropy spiderweb. A black cocktail-slash-tee-shirt dress with a deeply plunging back and shredded hem was apparently lifted from one of Carrington’s canvases.
