The Malaysian Bar Council (MJC) has filed an appeal against the High Court's decision to dismiss its application to challenge the Pardons Board's decision to reduce the prison sentence and fine of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case.

The Malaysian Bar Council (MJC) has filed an appeal against the High Court's decision to dismiss its application to challenge the Pardons Board's decision to reduce the prison sentence and fine of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in the SRC International Sdn Bhd case. Law yer Zainur Zakaria, representing the MJC, informed Bernama that the appeal notice was filed on December 3 last year.

On November 11 last year, the High Court rejected the MJC's application to obtain leave to initiate judicial review of the Pardons Board's decision. Judge Datuk Ahmad Kamal Md Shahid (currently a Court of Appeal Judge) said that the application was outside the court's jurisdiction and frivolous because he believed that the decision of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (YDPA) and the Pardons Board was part of an integrated process leading to the granting of pardon by the YDPA. On April 26 last year, the MJC filed the judicial review naming the Federal Territory Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya Pardons Board and Najib as respondents. The MJC sought a declaration that the Pardons Board's decision on January 29 last year regarding Najib's application to reduce his prison sentence by half, which saw him released early on August 23, 2028, was invalid, unconstitutional and void. The body also sought a declaration that the Pardons Board's decision to reduce Najib's fine from RM210 million to RM50 million was invalid, unconstitutional and void. Najib, 71, has been serving his sentence at Kajang Prison since August 23, 2022, after being convicted of misappropriating RM42 million from SRC International Sdn Bhd. He filed a petition for royal pardon on September 2, 2022, which saw the Pardons Board reduce his prison sentence from 12 years to six years and his fine from RM210 million to RM50 million
