The Malaysia International Tourism Development Association (MiTDA) has praised the government for not increasing electricity tariffs, saying it will benefit the tourism industry and provide relief to businesses.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysia International Tourism Development Association (MiTDA) has welcomed the government's decision not to increase electricity tariffs. MiTDA President Mahadzir Mansor said the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's concern for the burden of the people and the subsequent decision to maintain electricity tariffs is commendable. He said this move proves the government's awareness of the economic challenges faced, particularly by lower and middle-income groups.

“For the tourism industry, this decision provides great relief ahead of preparations for the Visit Malaysia 2026 (VMY2026). “The stability of electricity costs will help hoteliers, restaurateurs, and tourism operators offer competitive prices,” he said in a statement. Previously, newspapers reported that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had asserted that the government would not allow any increase in electricity tariffs that could affect the majority of the people. Further elaborating, Mahadzir Mansor said that MiTDA believes this step is a positive start for the economic recovery and the success of the country's tourism industry. “I am confident that this step is important to make Malaysia a world-class destination,” he said. - UTUSA
