Tom Cruise is unhappy about movie theaters screening two highly-anticipated films over his Dead Reckoning, but he really shouldn't be worried.
The upcoming blockbuster Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One should have little difficulty beating its competition at the box office this summer, 2023. The seventh installment of the Tom Cruise-led action franchise will premiere on July 12, a week before two other major feature releases, Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer and Greta Gerwig's Barbie.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Tom Cruise recently revealed his anger that the summer competition for Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One would be taking critical screens away from his new movie. Cruise's frustrations mostly arise from the fact that Nolan's Oppenheimer is likely to be projected on IMAX over Dead Reckoning once it is released just one week later.
Dead Reckoning is also Cruise's first appearance on the big screen since the cultural phenomenon of Top Gun: Maverick took place last year. Fans of the Top Gun sequel will likely be drawn to Dead Reckoning because of Cruise's star power alone. Cruise has starred in two separate movies in which he personally made over $100 million from box office ticket sales, Top Gun: Maverick and War of the Worlds.
Tom Cruise's Anger Highlights Just How Stacked Summer 2023 Is Cruise's reaction also highlights the number of blockbuster movies coming out in June and July 2023. Some of the most prominent movies coming out this summer include Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, and Elemental.
It's worth noting that despite Nolan's prestige as a filmmaker, none of his movies have pulled in a box office performance of over $700 million since 2014's Interstellar. IMAX projection will be a major draw for Oppenheimer to be seen in a theater. Based on the numbers alone, it appears that Nolan might need those IMAX screens more than Dead Reckoning does. Gerwig's most successful film Little Women, also just barely surpassed the $100 million mark at the box office.
