But Dead Reckoning is still struggling.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One hasn't been the smash hit that Paramount was hoping for, but the movie just pushed the franchise past a significant box office milestone. After first playing the character back in 1996, Tom Cruise returns as superspy Ethan Hunt for director Christopher McQuarrie's latest sequel.
Now, per The Numbers, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One's box office has passed $551.9 million worldwide, meaning the franchise's cumulative total has crossed $4 billion. In total, the seven movies in the franchise have earned a whopping $4.128 billion, with Mission: Impossible – Fallout still the reigning champion with $786.6 million.
How Much Longer Will Mission: Impossible Continue? With more than $4 billion earned, it's clear why the Mission: Impossible franchise has continued for nearly 30 years. Cruise continues to be a highly bankable star and, had the movie not cost $300 million, Mission: Impossible 7's box office would be a commendable result.
The film's disappointing numbers do, however, raise questions about how much longer the franchise will continue. Mission: Impossible 8 filming is already partially completed with a release date set for next summer. It's possible that the sequel will be delayed if the SAG-AFTRA strike continues for much longer, but the film is definitely going to be completed and released at some point. Beyond that, however, things are less clear.
McQuarrie and Cruise have expressed interest in Mission: Impossible 9, essentially saying that they will continue to make the movies as long as audiences are entertained. The future of the franchise, then, does seem like it will rest heavily on how the next movie performs.
