A few days after Rudolph 'Rudy' Farias IV was found unconscious outside a Houston church, police say he and his mother had spent eight years maintaining the ruse he was a missing person.

"After investigators talked with him yesterday, it was discovered that Rudy returned home the following day on March 8, 2015," Lieutenant Christopher Zamora said during a news conference.Rudy Farias's aunts, Sylvia Sanchez Lopez , Pauline Sanchez Rodriguez and Michelle Sanchez, say they always suspected Mr Farias had been living with his mother.
They included one sighting in 2018 that police responded to, but the investigation remained open as a missing person case. Lieutenant Zamora said Ms Santana claimed the person friends and family were seeing was not Mr Farias but her nephew, but "we disputed that". During a 2020 dispute over her mother's guardianship, Ms Santana's sisters accused her of forcing their mother to live in a home that had "animal urine and faeces throughout", and causing her to have "significant bed sores" because she "did not have a bed and slept on the couch".
But Lieutenant Zamora, with the police department's Missing Persons Unit, said Mr Farias was safe and he had decided to stay "with his mother by choice".
