A look at the Padres' full-season minor league affiliates in El Paso, San Antonio, Fort Wayne and Lake Elsinore
The Pacific Coast League is back. So are the Texas, Midwest and California leagues, for that matter.
Not that they went anywhere, not really. The nomenclature simply disappeared in favor of Triple-A West and the like for a year as Major League Baseball took over running the minors. But not everything will be familiar this year as Minor League Baseball has become a proving ground of sorts for rules that the Commissioner’s Office is considering for future implementation.
This year, a pitch timer will be in play at all full-season affiliates and the size of the base will increase from 15 square inches to 18 square inches in each of those leagues. Beyond those two experiments, the shift will be banned in Double-A, in High-A and in Low-A, and automated ball-strike technology will be used in all games in the Pacific Coast League beginning May 18.The pitching clock, defensive positioning limits and larger bases could arrive in the majors as soon as 2023.
