Padres catching prospect Brandon Valenzuela powering up in return to Fort Wayne; gas explosion cancels two Storm games
The 22-year-old catcher has homered twice in May and is hitting .302/.413/.547 with three homers through his first 17 games in a repeat assignment at high Single-A Fort Wayne.
A $100,000 signee out of Mexico in July 2017, Valenzuela hit himself onto the prospect radar in 2021, pairing six homers with a .307/.389/.444 batting line in 82 games at low Single-A Lake Elsinore.He held his own in a 15-game call-up to the Midwest League that year but saw his numbers dip to .209/.334/.348 despite hitting a career-high 10 homers in 99 games with the TinCaps.
A heady catcher who works well with pitching staffs, Valenzuela rededicated himself to his conditioning this offseason, shedding 12 pounds and cutting his body fat by 4 to 5 percent entering spring training. The improvements have allowed him to expand his range while blocking balls behind the plate and improve his bat speed. A year of maturity has also allowed the left-handed-hitting Valenzuela to improve his approach at the plate as he’s cut his strikeout rate from 31 percent in that 15-game call-up with Fort Wayne to 23 percent last year to 20 percent this year.“I think he’s taking his shots a little bit more knowing he can control the strike zone,” Padres assistant farm directorsaid.
The Padres issued a statement in which they said no organizational players or personnel were involved in the incident.
