Former Padres top prospect lasts just four innings in first official game back in organization
A wild Anderson Espinoza ran out of steam in his official return to the Padres’ organization.to visiting Sugar Land on Saturday.
Espinoza, 25, struck out four and allowed four hits, four walks and a hit batter in his first start for the Padres organization since he was traded to the Cubs in the summer of 2021 for Jake Marisnick.Espinoza made his MLB debut with the Cubs last year, but had a 5.40 ERA in 18 1/3 innings in the majors last summer. He was removed from the 40-man roster after the season, elected free agency and signed a minor league deal with the Padres.
Espinoza had back-to-back Tommy John surgeries after beginning the 2017 season as the organization’s top prospect. Right-hander Jake Sanchez allowed two runs in the fifth after Espinoza’s exit and right-hander Pedro Avila allowed an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning. Third baseman Tim Lopes homered in a second straight game and catcher Pedro Severino went 2-for-4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored.
