NSW Premier Chris Minns has promised to regenerate the clogged-up Aboriginal land claims process to ensure they’re dealt with faster.
The Premier met with Minister of Lands Steve Kamper over the weekend to discuss how the government could speed up the process.
“If there is a piece of land that is Crown land, it’s being used for a useful and lawful public purpose and that includes recreation, for example, lawn bowls or tennis, then it can’t be subject to an Aboriginal land claim and it stays on the government books.” Over 545 land claims were approved or part-approved in 2022-23, the highest number since the Aboriginal Land Rights Act 1983 came into force. There are currently 38,339 active land claims on NSW Crown Land, according to the state government, some of which have been sitting unresolved for up to 14 years.
