Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming suggests highway concessionaires offer a 50% discount on toll fees during festive seasons, urging them to 'give back to society' as a corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative.
Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming has proposed that expressway concessionaires offer a 50% discount on toll fees during festive seasons as a corporate social responsibility ( CSR ) initiative. Nga, in an interview with China Press, urged the 32 highway concessionaires to 'give back to society' during these periods, allowing everyone to celebrate and partake in the festive joy.
He noted that with their abundant profits, concessionaires could afford to offer such a discount, especially during major holidays like Chinese New Year. Nga emphasized that current toll agreements lack clauses for exemptions, necessitating government funding for past exemptions. He plans to raise the matter at the upcoming cabinet meeting on January 24th to discuss potential changes to the implementation. This proposal comes amidst the government's recent decision to abolish toll exemptions during festive seasons for Class 1 vehicles. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi announced this decision, stating it was made during a cabinet meeting last year. The government had previously spent an average of RM20 million daily for toll exemptions during festive periods, accumulating a significant cost. However, the government intends to adopt a more targeted approach to toll exemptions, potentially utilizing the Principal Database System (PADU) to identify low-income groups like the B40 and M40 for targeted assistance.Federation of Malaysian Consumers Associations (FOMCA) CEO Dr T Saravanan suggests leveraging PADU for this purpose, ensuring that those who need it most benefit from targeted toll exemptions. This shift in policy aims to provide financial relief to specific demographics while minimizing the overall budgetary impact. As Malaysians prepare for the upcoming Chinese New Year, the debate surrounding toll exemptions and the potential for concessionaires to offer discounts continues to be a topic of discussion
