HBO Max has revealed the Thursday, January 12 premiere date for Velma, the adult animated series from Mindy Kaling that takes a closer look at Mystery Inc Scooby gang.
HBO Max has confirmed the release date for Velma, the adult animated series from Mindy Kaling. The project was announced back in February 2021. Consisting of ten episodes, Velma was initially described as the origin story of the underappreciated brains of the Scooby Gang, with Kaling voicing the title role. The show was promised to pull back the curtain and reveal more of the beloved and complex mystery-solver.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY After a teaser trailer that offered a glimpse of Velma and its tone, TVLine confirms that the animated series will debut on Thursday, January 12. It's so far unconfirmed whether all ten episodes will debut at once, weekly, or if the streaming service will favor a different release pattern of dropping batches of episodes at once. Kaling's current HBO Max series, The Sex Lives of College Girls, has favored the latter approach.
Velma, co-developed by Charlie Grandy, boasts an impressive supporting guest cast. Some actors involved in the series include Jane Lynch, Wanda Sykes, Melissa Fumero, Ming-Na Wen, Shay Mitchell, Debby Ryan, and Scooby-Doo veteran Frank Welker. But one aspect viewers shouldn't expect, at least at first, is Scooby-Doo. Grandy explained that they considered bringing in the unmistakable dog but that it ultimately wouldn't fit the more adult tone of the series.
Grandy also talked about a potential spinoff with Harley Quinn, a strong example of an adaptation that took familiar characters and delivered them in fresh and hilarious ways. If it's the case that Velma can tap into some of that, then viewers could be in for a treat when the series arrives just in a few short weeks.
