Dozens of world leaders are gathered in Kenya’s capital, Nairobi, as the Africa Climate Summit 2023 -- the continent’s first-ever climate summit -- gets underway.

Launching the inaugural three-day summit on Monday, Kenya’s president William Ruto, stressed that “this is no ordinary summit." “For a very long time, we have looked at this as a problem. There are immense opportunities as well,” he continued. The Kenyan leader called on increased climate investment as his call was heeded with millions of dollars in investment pledged as the summit enters its second day.
At least 4,000 people have been killed, and 19 million more have been affected by extreme weather events in Africa since the beginning of 2022, according to research published by Science Direct.
