After being denied in Pacific Classic, veteran jockey takes a pair of stakes on holiday card at Del Mar
But the veteran picked up a pair of consolation prizes Monday afternoon as he rode the winners in two lesser stakes at Del Mar.
Smith, whose Geaux Rocket Ride was beaten by a neck by Flavien Prat aboard Baffert’s Arabian Knight in the $1 million Pacific Classic, dominated both of Monday’s ungraded stakes. Crazy Hot got it done after the afternoon’s penultimate race was delayed 15 minutes by a very bright setting sun. On sunny days, races starting from the gates at the far end of the backstretch head straight into the setting sun at Del Mar.
Crazy Hot was making her third start. In her last outing, she finished third in the CTBA allowance at Del Mar on Aug. 6 — a race that included two other fillies in Sunday’s field. Crazy Hot out-ran both those horses for a second time.Del Mar’s summer meeting closes this weekend with the Grade I Del Mar Debutante on Saturday and the Grade I Del Mar Futurity on Sunday.
