The campaign launch also comes on the same day he is set to participate in a town hall with CNN, one month after Trump held his own town hall with the network, and on the same day as his 64th birthday.
Although known to GOP primary voters as Trump's loyal 2016 and 2020 running mate, Pence will now need to distinguish himself from the former president after their public falling out following the 2020 presidential election and Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot that forced Pence to flee violent protesters. Since that harrowing moment, Pence has distanced himself from Trump and called for a return to traditional conservative values.
Pence, however, said he"will always be grateful for what President Trump did for this country" and that he has"often prayed for him" in the years since.
