Dozens of migrant families are being temporarily housed in hotels in New York City and the children are being enrolled in public schools. But as the challenges continue, the governor is calling on the president to help.
"Using the Row Hotel is a great idea," Awawdeh said. "It's something we've been advocating for and to use other facilities like the Row Hotel until they're able to get on their feet."
He also wants the mayor to look to the future to figure out how to move these families from hotels into permanent homes. "We are in a moment right now seeing many folks coming to New York City who need support," Awawdeh said. "And New York is not going to turn its back on those who need a helping hand in this moment."
The Row Hotel will be home to 200 families; however, the hotel has the capacity to house even more people if needed. Adams has not said when the families will arrive.Mayor Eric Adams said 5,500 migrant kids have been enrolled in the city's public schools. P.S. 33 in Chelsea has seen an influx of migrant children. Boxes of donated clothes have been set up in front of the school.
