Rep. Madison Cawthorn (R) has lost his primary in N.C. The controversial freshman was defeated by Chuck Edwards.
On May 17, Democratic nominee Cheri Beasley, the first Black woman to serve as a state Supreme Court chief justice, won the North Carolina Senate primary. “North Carolina, I’m honored to be your nominee and I’m honored to stand with all of you and on the shoulders of many trailblazers who came before to be the first African American woman to be your Democratic Senate nominee,” she said at a post-election rally. “North Carolina, this is our moment.
Beasley, 56, who will face Republican Rep. Ted Budd, in the general election, moved to North Carolina shortly after graduating law school in Tennessee and made history in 2019 when she became the first Black woman to be chief justice on the state Supreme Court. Rep. Ted Budd , who has Trump’s endorsement in the race, won the Republican nomination for Senate in North Carolina on May 17.
Budd in his victory speech immediately went on offense, casting Beasley as a liberal vote for President Biden’s agenda and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer . “My opponent Cheri Beaseley — she doesn’t have any problem with Joe Biden’s agenda, so let’s be clear: Cheri is the most radical, liberal candidate to ever run for U.S. Senate here in North Carolina,” he said Tuesday. “So if we send her to Washington, she would enable every element of Joe Biden’s agenda. And if we think it’s bad now, it’s only going to get worse with Cheri Beaseley in the U.S. Senate.
