Microsoft's lighter word processing app, Notepad, is finally getting a spell check feature after more than four decades since its first introduction back in 1983. The new addition is available now via the latest Windows 11 update.

Much like how it works on Microsoft Word, Notepad's spell check feature will highlight misspelt words with a red underline. One thing to note is that you'll only get the list of correct spellings by clicking on the highlighted word instead of right-clicking it. There's also a new autocorrect function that, well, auto corrects commonly misspelt words as you type.

Now, those who wish to keep things old school for whatever reason can choose to disable the new spellcheck and autocorrect features in Notepad by going to the settings menu by clicking on the gear button on the top right. You can also customise the former to only be available on a file type basis and exclude specific formats like .md or .srt. Additionally, spell check is automatically disabled in log files and coding-related files.

These new tools are among several newly introduced additions to the 41-year-old app. Earlier this year, Microsoft added a new tabs feature to Notepad, allowing users to open and switch between different text files without needing to open a new instance. It is unlikely that the app will reach Word levels of usefulness, but the newer updates are appreciated nonetheless.
