It comes following the publication of photographs in the Sunday Times of injuries allegedly suffered by a farmer, Breen White, during a late-night altercation with Mr McGahon outside a Louth pub
Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said that John McGahon would not be on the election ticket if he were a member of his party.

Mr McGahon, who was elected to the Seanad after the incident, denied the claims and said he was assaulted and acted in self-defence.
"I was surprised, but that's a matter for Fine Gael. That's a matter for the people of Louth. He’s on the ballot. The Tánaiste also said he was "shocked" by the photographs and "didn't realise at all that the assault was of that scale". In an interview with the Irish Mirror, Labour leader Ivana Bacik said she was "shocked" by the photos in the Sunday Times.
