ICYMI - Michael Higgins: The Liberal failure on crime has left a trail of broken victims
Overwhelmingly, Canadians are fearful of “catch-and-release” criminals causing more mayhem while on bail; drug dealers bringing misery into their neighbourhoods; and a government that is not listening to the concerns of the public., speaking as it does to the fears of ordinary Canadians and how safe they feel in their community. An astonishing nine-out-of-10 Canadians believe repeat violent offenders should basically be locked up without bail or have it severely restricted, according to the poll.
It’s a sign that the justice pendulum has swung too far in favour of the offender and away from the rights of the victim and society. Part of the root cause of the problem is that in 2019 the Liberals passed Bill C-75, an omnibus piece of legislation that among other things made it easier for repeat offenders to get bail. The result was as catastrophic as it was predictablethat looked at offences by criminals on bail in the years before C-75 and the years after.
In 2017, Edmonton police tracked 2,880 people who had been arrested and then released on bail or ordered to attend court. In the following three years, 1,784 of them committed another 12,743 crimes, including three homicides.
