Miami Heat: 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder vs. 1989 Porsche 959: ThrowbackThursday
With the 918’s flashy acid-green brake calipers and smooth sports-racer styling, Porsche has severed the link between its newest supercar and the mainstay 911. That’s surely part of the reason that, even in supercar-dense Miami, the 918 Spyder was a sensation. We were surrounded by camera-phone-wielding pilot fish for two solid days. Okay, we acknowledge that our behavior might have been partially responsible for the attention.
That guy is the unusually permissive Preston Henn, proprietor of a giant flea market and drive-in movie-theater complex in Fort Lauderdale called the Swap Shop. Henn raced through South Florida’s halcyon days in everything from offshore powerboats to Porsche 962s. This during a period when drug money infiltrated IMSA sports-car racing by way of competitors such as John Paul Sr. and Randy Lanier. Henn teamed with A.J.
While it might not have garnered the attention of the masses the way the flashier 918 did, those who recognized the 959 looked upon it wide-eyed. “I never thought I would see one of these!” Those who knew the 959 knew everything about the 959. And save for one teenager whom we met at a refueling stop, all those people were, like me, in their early-to-mid-40s. The 959 burned into their psyches during adolescence when a new supercar could rearrange the greatest number of synapses.
