Three men were sentenced to life in prison and one was acquitted by a Dutch court Thursday over the shooting down of Malaysia Airlines flight MH17 in 2014, killing all 15 crew members and 283 passengers.Key Facts
Russians Igor Girkin, Sergei Dubinsky and Ukrainian Leonid Kharchenko were found guilty of shooting down the passenger plane over eastern Ukraine in 2014, killing all 298 passengers and crew. Oleg Pulatov was acquitted of all charges as Judge Hendrik Steenhuis says Pulatov was not present when a missile was fired at the plane and had no influence over a plan to do so.
The three convicted men were ordered by Steenhuis to pay at least 16 million euros in compensation to the relatives of the victims.

Presiding Judge Hendrik Steenhuis said that evidence presented by prosecutors at a trial that lasted more than two years proved that the Boeing 777 flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was brought down by a Buk missile fired by pro-Moscow Ukrainian rebels on July 17, 2014. None of the defendants appeared for the trial that began in March 2020 and if they are convicted, it’s unlikely they will serve any sentence anytime soon. Prosecutors had sought life sentences for all four.
