Relatives of Elliot Blair rejected that suggestion, saying they plan to have an independent autopsy conducted because of “unanswered questions.”
“The family, which has extensive legal training in criminal law, wholeheartedly believes based on their initial investigation that Elliot was the victim of a brutal crime,” said a statement released by the family Tuesday evening.
In their statement, the family said that throughout the ordeal, Mexican authorities as well as the funeral home suggested that Blair’s body be cremated, which the family rejected to enable their own autopsy. The family statement said Blair and his wife had stayed at the Las Rocas Resort and Spa — and specifically in the same room — on multiple occasions over the past five years. Blair spoke fluent Spanish and was familiar with the hotel’s layout and did not fall from a balcony, but from an open-air walkway outside his room’s front door.
