Since Texas passed a strict anti-abortion law in September, more and more women along the southern border have been going to unregulated pharmacies in Mexico to get abortion pills. | via NPR

One of two abortion drugs available without a prescription in some Mexican drugstores.

One drug, Mifepristone, blocks the hormone needed for a pregnancy to continue; the other drug, Misoprostol, causes cramping and bleeding to empty the uterus. ThePharmacies in Nuevo Progreso have noticed a sharp increase in a certain clientele. Misoprostol, which is also prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers, is freely sold over the counter. He sells Mifepristone, the exclusive abortion drug, under the counter. But Garza claims he doesn't actually like to sell either one.

"They're stuck in the Valley with no access to abortion," says Carla Angulo-Pasel, a political scientist and assistant professor at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. "And the problem with that, of course, becomes the regulation aspect," says Angulo-Pasel."We don't know if those drugs have been FDA approved. And then you have the problem of not even needing a prescription, so there is no actual medical attention given to these women. It's just out of desperation."
