Mets manager Buck Showalter has some interesting thoughts.
It’s all in the spirit of owing it to contenders, according to Showalter, and not for the Mets’ own best interest, which could include assessing Baty’s performance at the highest level and letting him gain experience through Oct. 1, when the regular season ends.on the broadcast Tuesday night as the Mets faced Washington Nationals left-hander Patrick Corbin:
He had said the other day that you play differently against contenders — you owe it to the teams they’re battling with.‘What I’m doing differently is I’m playing Baty at third base against a left-hander today.’Considered one of the Mets’ top prospects, the 23-year-old Baty played 11 games last year and 90 more this year in the majors. It has not gone as easily as his minor league career: Baty has a .213/.283/.329 line with nine home runs and 34 RBI. His defense has also been erratic.
