New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz has been out for the whole season with a knee injury.
“He was emotionally destroyed,” Edwin and Alexis’ father, Edwin Sr., said in Spanish, via Gonzalez. “When they were celebrating, the first one who got to Edwin was him. And he touched him on the back. So he thought that when he touched him on the back was when Edwin got hurt.”
According to Gonzalez, Edwin showed Alexis the video and explained that he was not at fault. Edwin was trying to avoid having his toes stepped on in the celebration, and took an awkward step that caused the injury. Edwin, 29, signed a five-year, $102 million contract with the Mets this offseason, making him the highest-paid closer in league history. The 2022 All-Star selection put up a 1.31 ERA for the Mets last year in 32 game appearances.
Alexis is posting a 2.15 ERA for the Cincinnati Reds this season and has 36 saves. He was also an All-Star selection this year.
