Meta is shifting away from its traditional fact-checking program, replacing it with a community-driven system similar to X's Community Notes. This move comes amid growing criticism of content moderation practices and a desire to prioritize free expression.
Meta is abandoning its fact-checking program that relied on trusted partners and will be implementing a community-driven system akin to X's Community Notes , CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on Tuesday. 'We're going back to our origins and focusing on minimizing errors, streamlining our policies, and restoring freedom of expression on our platforms,' Zuckerberg stated in a video. 'Specifically, here's what we'll do.
First, we'll eliminate fact-checkers and substitute them with community notes similar to x, beginning in the U.S.' This shift occurs as Meta and other social media companies have recently reversed course on content moderation, partly due to the politicization of moderation decisions and programs. Republicans have consistently criticized Meta's fact-checking system and fact-checking in general as biased and favoring Democrats. X's Community Notes system, championed by CEO Elon Musk as a replacement for X's prior attempts at addressing misinformation, has been lauded by conservatives, allowing for a blend of fact-checking, trolling, and other community-driven behaviors. Meta's initial fact-checking system, introduced on Facebook in 2016, operated by routing information on its platforms through third-party fact-checkers certified by the International Fact-Checking Network and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network. The program involved over 90 organizations that fact-checked posts in more than 60 languages. In the United States, these included groups like PolitiFact and Factcheck.org. In a press release, Meta explained that it could identify posts potentially spreading misinformation based on user reactions to content and its rate of dissemination. Independent fact-checkers also actively sought out posts containing possible misinformation. Posts flagged as containing misinformation were then displayed lower in feeds pending review
