The mayor of Cork has called for an investigation into the forecaster's decision to maintain an Orange warning despite floods sweeping the county

Met Éireann’s head of forecasting admitted that the national meteorological service needs to “do a little better” as he explained why a Status Red weather warning was not issued for the south of the country yesterday.

However, he said Storm Babet had “come a little too early” for the public to have benefitted from these changes.“What we’re going to do now is at the thresholds that we have for the warnings, and we’re going to change them in reflection of what’s happening in the climate,” said Mr Sherlock, noting that the lower threshold for yellow wind warnings had increased by 5kph.

“It should have been Red,” he told Newstalk Breakfast this morning, adding that this would have prepared schools and businesses for the impact of the storm, and some damage could have been prevented. “Other parts of Cork were in Orange-level territory in terms of the amount of rainfall, and parts of Cork were below or even just creeping into Yellow… We work on widespread events, very localised events, particularly along the south coast, caused the issues,” added the meteorologist.
